The Penobscot geocache is
alive and well. According to the log, we were
the first visitors since you placed the stash. Your coords, let me tell you
that they were the most accurate I've ever used. The first time I've actually
seen 0.0 feet when standing on a stash. Great work!
We hiked up the Penobscot Mtn
trail from Jordan Pond. That 1/4 mile right after
the carriage road was pretty tricky, especially since my significant other is
just
coming off a broken hand and still can't grab hand holds very well. I thought I
was
going to have to lower her down some of the steep rocky inclines on the way
back. The
walk along the ridgeline to the summit was pleasant with lots of amazing views
in every
direction. A few folks around but no one gave us a second look as we wandered
down to
secure the stash. We relaxed there, ate and took photos for a half hour or so.
You're right
in your description, this is a nice spot to take a snooze.
Regards, Bob

Thank you ninja. Great cache
and great hike. Your cache is in fine shape as of 5/23/02.
Took a frog, left a bull key ring. If we count this cache it is number 101 for
us. Of all of
them there are only two that we did not leave our trademark, bottle of spring
water. The other
one is your cache at Pine Meadow Lake in Harriman Park, NY.
Now for the full story. I
only first heard of this cache on 5/18 from Bassoonpilot while at the
NY/NJ geocachers picnic. I received an email from the Pilot on 5/22/02 while at
the library in Bar
Harbor. We were planning on hiking up to Sargent Pond from the west side,
starting on the Hadlock
Brook Trail. We followed our plans, but after reaching Sargent Pond we
continued up Penobscot and
a short way down the other side to your cache. Then returned to Sargent Pond.
Followed by going to
the summits of Sargent Mt., Gilmore Peak, Parkman Mt., and Bald Peak before
returning to start. We had
an almost cloudless day, slight haze and high about 70.

Howdy, Cache Ninja! I am here right now on my 30th annual Fall pilgrimage to
M.D.I. and Acadia N.P.
I wouldn't have known about this cache if it wasn't for a fine Geocaching
acquaintance (Waterboy With Wife)
who knows how much I love this entire place. The trek up the south ridge to
Penobscot Mtn. summit
(or sometimes alternatively by way of Jordan Cliffs), then past the picturesque
Sargent Pond and over
to Sargent Mtn. summit, down to the Deer Brook trail (where I've been ignoring
the closed signs for the
last couple of years what's the deal with that anyway?!), around the north
shore of Jordan Pond (or
alternatively via the carriage roads along the west side), and returning to my
car at the Jordan Pond
parking area is one of the 5 or 6 "absolutely-must-do" hikes on my
list each time I visit. Every now and
then I like to reverse the route simply because I get to take in that
incredible view the entire way back
down the south ridge! When I entered the posted coordinates and plotted them on
my topo map, I knew in my
mind's eye the exact area where the cache was hidden. It's an unusual and
memorable spot I've seen dozens of
time, so I can understand why it's your favorite. Things were pretty dry up
there this Summer, though. My
GPSr brought me right to the hiding place and the coords were a dead match. The
cache was well hidden and in
fine condition. After reading through the brief logs and adding one of my own I
chose to take the flower
stamp, in exchange leaving two hand-crafted magnets and a "Mystery
Treasure" (it wouldn't fit in the container
of course, so I sealed it and the container in a heavy-duty Zip-Loc bag before
re-hiding it all.) I just
wanted to take this moment to thank you for adding this interesting twist to an
always enjoyable day-hike.
I will pass the secret cache details to a very close Geo-friend who was with me
in spirit on Sunday and who
I'm sure (yes, Zh!) will visit here for the first time real soon. Cheers. ~Rich

Love this area of the park. We had to stop by for a second time at your cache.
Our two favorite places
in the park are the Great Head and Sargent Pond. Went to Great Head on our
first day, and saved Sargent Pond,
and your cache, for the last day (10/11/02). We started our hike at Jordon Pond
and took the Asticou and
Amphitheatre trail up to Sargent Pond. While hiking we talked about our first visit
to this pond. It was on
a sunny October day. The foliage near the pond was at its brightest. This trip
was not quite as good. It was
not sunny, and a little before full foliage. After having lunch at the pond we
visited your cache at 12:10 PM.
Signed book, left a Canadian Loony dollar, and a Lake George (NY) pin. Took
nothing. Observed that you had another
visitor to the cache on August 22 that did not register on the web yet.
After leaving the cache we went back to the pond, down the south rim trail with
a slight detour to Cedar Swamp
Mountain. Then continued to ascend Mt. Eliot and take a walk along Harbor Brook
before returning to Jordon Pond.
After all that work, of course we had to go out for a lobster dinner.
Thank you for a great cache.

Our Third Visit (5/16/03)

Ninja, we just can not stay
away from this cache. It is a great one, at a great location. We
were the last visitors last year and the first this year. Of the three
times we visited this cache it was the first time we went up the way you
recommended. After finding the cache we continued on to Sargent Pond and
Sargent Mountain, completing about 7.5 miles before returning to Jordan Pond
House. That makes it one of our shorter hikes in Acadia. Oh yes, we
did this on our first day in Acadia this year. It was a beautiful but very
cool day. On the way up we got a beautiful photo of a red squirrel that
posed for us. Later we got a not so good photo of a large porcupine that
scrambled away when he saw us.
Again,
thank you Cache Ninja.
